About this work
A single soldier fills the sheet, helmet pushed back, mouth wrenched wide open in a scream, one hand clawing at his own eye and cheek. His face is stripped almost to the skull, cheekbones and jaw sharply visible beneath thin, weathered skin. In the black sky behind him a bright flare traces a curving line of light.
The figure is drawn in charcoal over a near-black ground, with sickly green-yellow tones picked out across the forehead, hand and jaw that make the skin look bruised and lifeless. Coarse, scratchy strokes model the screaming mouth and clutching fingers, and the single falling flare is the only other source of light, giving the sheet an intense, anguished mood of terror.
